The exhibition 'Sculpture at Pilane 2008' resides at the ancient setting of Pilane on the island Tjorn, on the Swedish west-coast from 14 June to 14 September 2008. Participating artists are Zhang Huan, Tony Cragg, Laura Ford and some of the leading sculptors from northern Europe.

Pilane is considered to be one of Sweden's most important and beautiful prehistoric sights, with a continuous history aging back to the early Neolithic period. Most predominant are the approximately one hundred visible graves from the Iron Age: stone circles, standing stones and stone settings.

One of this year's major events in Pilane is Three-Legged Buddha, a gigantic nine meter high and fourteen meter broad sculpture in beaten copper, by the internationally noted Chinese artist Zhang Huan. Three-Legged Buddha appeared at the Royal Academy of Arts in London last winter and throughout the summer it can be experienced at Pilane up until 14 September.

Laura Ford from the UK participates with several of her socially-charged works, including the installation Armour Boys. Kristian Blystad from Norway has brought his beautiful Dream to Pilane, Hanneke Beaumont from Holland exposes thought-provoking and inspiring bronzes and Viktor Korneev from Russia introduces a monumental foot, which may symbolize the thousands of years of human presence in Pilane.

The Preamium Imperiale awarded British sculptor Tony Cragg is participating for a second consecutive year as well as the Norwegian sculptors Marit Lyckander, Knut Wold and Hagbart Sollos. A group of seven granite heads by Lars Widenfalk is displayed in the indoor section (part two). Visiting painting artist is Bo Trankell.

Sculpture at Pilane 2008 is arranged and curated by Peter Lennby of the Pilane Heritage Society in collaboration with the National Heritage Board, Western Gotaland region, Tjorn municipality, the Foundation Framtidens Kultur, Lundgrenska Foundations and Kynningsrud.
